Our Juniors Summer Program provides a safe instructional sailing environment and an enjoyable summer for participating Juniors.  

We offer three sessions, each lasting two weeks.  Juniors may attend multiple sessions.  Classes are offered in Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Sailing.  Additional programs are offered in Lasers, Boating for Teens, Fishing and a Starfish class for children ages 5-7 years old.  A complete schedule is provided below.  In addition to sailing instruction, there will be other boating activities as well as related day trips and social events.  Each Junior will receive a certificate of completion and a lifetime of friends and memories.

Eligibility

The Summer Program is open to the children and grandchildren of SWYC members.  Children in the community whose parents are not members of SWYC are also welcome to participate in the program.

Basic Sailing

This class provides a basic introduction to the Sabot, equipment and sailing techniques.  The parts of the boat and sail, sailing terms, knots, points of sail and personal boating safety are taught.

 

 

 

Beginning Sabot Racing

Our learn-to-race program is an introduction to the intracases of racing.  Students will learn beginning racing skills such as starts, mark roundings, racing rules and wind shifts.

 

 


Intermediate Sailing

This class is for Juniors who have completed all beginning classes and are comfortable with the basic principles of sailing.  Basic rules of the water are introduced and the importance of teamwork is stressed.

 

 

 

Advanced Sabot Racing

This class stresses racing skills, rules, tactics, seamanship and boat tuning.  Sportsmanship and safety are encouraged.

     

Laser Sailing

Learn to sail and race this exciting high-performance boat.  The two week session will focus on different aspects of Laser sailing.  Minimum 3 years of Sabots required.

Double-Handed Sailing

This class is offered for the Junior who has completed Intermediate Sailing.  The focus on this class will include boat handling, rigging, spinnakers and teamwork.  The class will use CFJs and Keel Boats.  Boats are provided.

OTHER CLASSES

DATES/TIMES

Fishing 101 (5 days)

Junior Anglers, beginners and experienced, will learn the fundamentals of fishing.  Four days of bay and coast fishing, along with a full day deep sea fishinig trip are planned.

M - F 9:00 – 4:30

Starfish Program (6 weeks) 

Starfish are 5-7 year olds.  The class is designed to introduce tots to sailing.  Students will experience sailing in our CJFs and Santana 20.  Instructors are always on board and the emphasis is on fun.  A 25 yard swim test with a PFD on is required.

Advanced Racing Team (4 weeks)

Our Racing Team will embark on a sailing adventure.  We will compete in Jr. Olympics, CJF, Laser, and 29er Nationals.  Members on  the advanced team must receive approval from the Junior Program Director.

Sabot Nationals (2 weeks)

This two week course will provide high-level instruction and prepare Juniors for the Junior Sabot Nationals Regatta.  This course will include a three-day clinic and coaching at the event.

Sailing Adventures (2 weeks)

This two week class is offered for the Junior who has completed Double-Handed, Laser or any of the racing classes.  The focus of Sailing Adventures will be to expand sailing skills using a variety of boats including Lasers, CFJs, ,420s, 29ers, and Keel boats.  Cruising, ocean adventures, seamanship, marlinspike and even some fishing will round out our activities.

Adult Sabot Sailing (5 weeks)

Learn to sail a Sabot.  Experience the thrill of sailing.  No previous experience necessary.  Class will meet 6 times.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Keel Boat Sailing - Spend the day cruising San Diego Bay on a large yacht.  Learn about spinnaker flying and big boat racing.
Fishing - Join the SWYC Anglers for a day of Deep Sea Fishing on the high seas.
Kayaking- Learn a j-stroke and then paddle your own ocean kayak across San Diego Bay.
Theme Days - Join the fun and share in the adventure of pirates, luau and cake days.

Boats

Every student is required to provide his/her own boat.  There is, however, a limited number of Sabots available at SWYC for charter.  All boats must be seaworthy and in working condition.  A list of boats for sale is available.  Please indicate on your registration form if you will need to charter a boat.  Boats are provided in these classes:  Double-Handed Sailing, Starfish, and Adult Sabot Sailing.

General Information

All participants are welcome to Juniors Open house and Closing BBQ.
Transportation - Students must provide their own transportation to and from SWYC.  Carpool lists will be provided by interested parties. 
Clothing and Supplies - Students should bring a change of clothing and a towel each day.  Shoes will be worn at all times, both in the boats and on the docks.
Lifejackets - Each child is required to provide and property wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket while on the docks and on the water.  It is suggested that you acquire a comfortable vest-type jacket.  A cushion is not acceptable.
Food - Students may bring a sack lunch or order a box lunch from the snack bar.  Soft drink machines are available.

Health Requirements

Students must be of sound health with no specific physical limitations that might prevent their having a safe experience.  Each student will be required to fill out and return a medical and liability release form.

Swim Test

Students age 7-18 years old will be required to pass a 50 yard swimming test and must be able to tread water for 3 minutes with their life jackets on. 

Scholarships

Southwestern Yacht Club is a non-profit organization.  Scholarships are available to those who need financial assistance. 

Discounts

Payments received in full by April 30th are eligible for a $20 discount.  We are always happy to have new faces at Southwestern Yacht Club.  If you sign up a friend who has never participated in a SWYC program before, you will receive a $20 discount.
