Junior Director

To maintain its reputation as one of the best Juniors programs in Southern California, SWYC employs an experienced full-time Junior Program Director.

Brian is a San Diego native and grew up sailing next door at San Diego Yacht Club. He had a successful junior sailing career, running through the full SCYYRA calendar of events in Sabots, FJs, Lasers, Laser IIs, 420s and a few other boats here and there. As a member of the Point Loma High School Sailing Team, he was a part of the team that won the team's first Mallory Trophy in 1993. After high school, Brian headed east to Boston University for his college years. He majored in environmental analysis and policy and sailed all four years at BU, serving as the team captain his senior year and was part of the team that won the fleet racing national championship in 1999.

After college, Brian headed north from Boston to Hanover, NH to coach the Dartmouth College Sailing Team for eight years, five as the assistant coach and three as the head coach.  While coaching at Dartmouth, Brian helped the team to national championship appearances all eight years, with quite a few podium finishes including a women's national championship in 2000. Over the course of his eight years at Dartmouth, he was fortunate enough to coach twenty-eight unique individuals named to the All American Team and help hundreds more enjoy a rewarding college sailing experience. While in Hanover, Brian spent a few summers, from 2005 through 2007, on Nantucket, running the Nantucket Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program. The program had roughly 200 sailors each summer and was focused on developing sailors who loved to be on the water and around the Club.

Having spent twelve years in New England, Brian decided it was time to move back home and thaw out, moving back in the fall of 2007. He started coaching at SDYC and became the Head Coach in 2008. Brian traveled with SDYC juniors throughout California and coached everything from beginner sailors through the advanced racers. After three years as the head coach an opportunity opened up in the Dockmaster's office, so he decided to examine a different aspect of yacht club operations. He would like to tip his hat to all of the Port Captains out there! It was an interesting experience but he is happy to be back in the sailing world again!

What he has come to realize over his years of being involved in youth sailing is that, despite his racing experience, the most important thing in the world of boating is to foster a love of boating, whatever aspect it may be, so any one person can enjoy their time on the water for the rest of their lives. He has made sure that a love of boating, along with sound sportsmanship, seamanship and honesty, serves as the foundation for any program with which he is involved.

Brian lives in Point Loma with his wife, Kim, sons, Oliver and Elliott, and their dog, Kirby. Brian currently tries to get out in the family Snipe or Lehman, when he can, and has been known to sail with his father in the Etchells or in a Beer Can during the summer. He is excited to be back in the world of junior sailing and a part of the Southwestern Team!
